You LOVE to make jewelry.
It’s your passion, your outlet, your favorite thing to do when you need to unwind.
Whenever you wear your handmade creations, it feels like a bajllion people ask where you bought it.
“Oh this little thing?” – you say. “I made it”.
“You did?…OMG, can you make ME one?”
Tan tan taaaan (Suspenseful Music)
This is where the internal struggle kicks in.
You think to yourself:
“Heck yeah, I can make her one! I would love to…But, she’s my friend! I could NEVER charge her for it. I’ll just give it to her as a gift… for her birthday.”
Phewh! Potential awkward situation averted.
Then, it happens again with another friend…and again with another friend…
You’re flattered. Of course. But you can’t give away a new necklace to everyone. Can you?
The thought of asking people to pay you for making jewelry just doesn’t feel right. It’s your hobby, not your job!
You do it because you love it, not because you HAVE to.
What would they think of you if you tried to SELL to them. Would they reject you? Would they think less of you?
Plus, it’s not like you’re a REAL DESIGNER with any professional training! You just like to make jewelry for yourself when you feel like it.
You know you want more and you dream of “some day” selling your designs. SOME day, when you’re ready. #scared
Selling isn’t evil. No. It’s just the opposite.
Selling your handmade jewelry means having extra cash.
Having extra cash means having more freedom.
The freedom to choose how you spend your time.
The freedom to work or fool around with your friends.
The freedom to choose. Period.

Alonso Sobrino is a family owned business, located in Puerto Rico, that’s closing in on its 100th B-day pretty soon.
We started as a fabric store in Old San Juan, who sold fabric to mom & pop shops and to the public (wholesale & retail).
15 years ago we saw the growing need for beads and jewelry supplies in the island and we decided to expand into the beading world.
Originally, we started this online store because we wanted to reach the people who lived far away from us.
Instead, our online bead and fabric store has allowed us to carry out our mission of empowering women by giving them the tools they need in order to both make and sell their handmade jewelry.
Why the change of heart?
Well, the economy in Puerto Rico has been backpedaling for the past six to eight years, and 2015 isn’t looking any better.
In 2014 an estimated 72 THOUSAND people left the island to move to the U.S. ( this number is expected to increase in 2015).
Young, educated, smart people are leaving in search of better job opportunities. These people are our friends, our cousins, our brothers, our sisters.
Tired of watching our friends and loved ones leave us behind, we decided it was about time we did something about it!
We want to help people take matters into their own hand-s-made jewelry (get it?).
Learning to to sell their jewelry, will give people the freedom to choose where they want to live. If they want to leave, fine, but it’s because they wanted to. Not because they had to.
No one should be forced out of their home because the economy in their country is tanking.
We hope to create a community of powerful and highly motivated women who, through beading, hard work and selling their designs, can create a life filled with choices.
